CHAPTER 1
THE ENTERPRISE OF CHEMISTRY

1-1 The People

Chemist solve problems dealing with matter.
There is a close relationship between structure of matter and properties of matter.
A theory is an explanation of some relationships.

1-2 The ingredients

Matter- anything that takes up space and has volume OR anything that has the property of inertia.

Mass- measure of amount of mater in an object.

Inertia-a body in motion tends to stay in motion-a body at rest tends to stay a rest. Resistance to any change in motion.
Energy-ability to do work

Kinetic Energy-energy of motion Ek = 1/2 mV2

Potential Energy-energy at rest Ep = mgh (explained chap 2)

Total Energy= Kinetic + Potential

1-3 The Rules

Law of Conservation of Matter(mass) and Energy- matter or energy may not be created or destroyed but may be changed into one another. Sum of mass and energy always conserved! Other forms of energy potential, kinetic, radiant, mechanical, solar, nuclear, chemical, electrical.

1-4 The Industry

products-things made
raw materials-found in nature-used to make products
Table 1-1 TOP 50 CHEMICALS PG 8

Raw materials are used by the chemical industry in more than 13,500 plants in the US to make more than 10,000 chemicals. Chemicals(INTERMEDIATES) are used to make products. The Ultimate Market supplies fundamental human needs.

1-5 The process

Scientific process(FIND A BETTER EXPLANATION!!!)

observation-what you see/collecting facts

hypothesis-idea of what you think is occurring

experiment-a process to test hypothesis

conclusion-the results of the experiment

theory-a verified hypothesis-a general principle that may be used to explain certain phenomena.

scientific law-a precise statement of fact explaining the regularity of natural phenomena.

1-6 The practice-student read

1-7 The reality-student read

1-8 The future -student read

1-9 The Course

CHEMISTRY IF THE STUDY AND INVESTIGATION OF THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER.(you will probably see this on your test!)
